About · Greg Hughes
I paint the in-between hours of a film set.
I am a painter working from London. For the last decade I have earned my living as a film extra — a member of the background crowd you do not look at — and I paint the rooms, trailers and holding pens where that work is done.
The paintings sit between document and reverie. They are made from phone snaps taken between takes, sketches on the back of call sheets, and the long flat hours of waiting that are the actual content of a working day on a film set.
The current series, Crowd Holding, was begun in the winter of 2022 and continues to grow. Selected work is available as open and limited editions.
